The wild Gironde coastline stretches for 126 km forming a marvellous landscape with its characteristic cordon of dunes.

The beaches contain a rich variety of vulnerable flora and fauna species forming a very special and fragile natural area that the Conseil Général de la Gironde wants to conserve. Our aim is to promote “beaches in their natural state” and we are asking communes to make a commitment to respect the Quality Charter on cleaning beaches.

In order to protect the beach ecosystem, it is vital to preserve the debris found on the foreshore, as this represents a vital link in the food chain on the beaches. It consists of plant debris and refuse of human origin, which is deposited by the sea at high tide.

Every year, about 3,000 m³ of waste are removed from our beaches. This has to be done manually as this is the only way to sort all these deposits and ensure that the beach ecosystem is preserved.
This is the reason why the Conseil Général, jointly with the communes, has put some incentive measures in place.
